Araucana Chicken Breed

The Araucana chicken breed was developed by the Araucana Indians in central Chile and discovered by missionaries in the 1500s. Araucanas are believed to have originated from a form of  jungle fowl. The Araucana chicken breed still exists in the wild in the Andes mountain range and the Amazon Basin.

The Araucana chicken breed arrived in England in the 1920s and the US in the 1930s, where they were further developed. A lavender variety was developed in Scotland in the 1930s. UK breeds have a small crest and tail, while American breeds do not have a tail at all.

The popularity of the Araucana chicken breed comes from the colorful eggs. The Araucana chicken breed lays a beautiful bluish gréén egg. The hybrids of the breed lay eggs in ask shades of blue and gréén.

The Araucana chicken breed has ear tufts that grow in all directions from the earlobes.
